Questions, answered plainly.

What people ask first, before they make room for us.

Today

Can I use Tojuri on my Mac today?

Tojuri is opening to invited people first, a few at a time, so everyone gets a hand with setup. It is a native Mac app for daily backups of your Mac and the external drives you choose.

Ask for an invite, and we email you the download when a place opens. About the download.

Which Macs will it run on?

Macs with Apple silicon, running macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

What will it cost?

Personal is $39 a year for one Mac and its external drives, and the Founder offer is $99 once for the first 500. Plans go on sale after the invited first round; invited people do not pay Tojuri while we test together. Amazon bills your storage separately and directly. Long-term storage is about $1 per TB a month. Files backed up in the last 3 months cost about $4 per TB a month while they wait. In detail: about $1.08 to $1.55 per TB a month once files have been backed up for 92 days, and about $4.10 before that. Backup history, requests and getting files back add cost. See pricing.

Is iPhone, Windows or business coming?

Later. The direction is more Macs and family next, then Windows, then iPhone and photos, then business. It is a direction, not a promise, and there are no dates. Where this is headed.

Your files

What does Tojuri back up?

Personal files on your Mac and the external drives you choose: documents, projects, photos, footage, audio. Replaceable macOS files, apps, caches and other backups are skipped. It is not a bootable copy of your Mac.

Does this replace Time Machine or iCloud?

Keep them if they work for you. Time Machine gives you a fast local copy, and iCloud keeps files in sync across devices. Tojuri adds a separate backup in your own cloud storage.

Files that live only in iCloud must be downloaded to your Mac before Tojuri can back them up.
What happens when I unplug a drive?

Its existing backup stays. New changes are picked up when you plug it back in. A drive must finish a backup first, and retention settings, storage payment and access to your Amazon account still matter.

How often does it back up?

Daily, on its own, at an hour you choose. Back Up Now is always there. Continuous backup is not planned for the first release.

Can I get an earlier version of a file?

Yes. Pick a backup by date and bring back one file, a folder or everything, as it was then.

Privacy and security

Can Tojuri see my files?

No. Your files are encrypted on your Mac before they leave it, and Tojuri does not have the key. Tojuri never holds a copy of your files.

Do I need my own Amazon account?

Yes. The first release is built around storage in your own Amazon account. Amazon bills storage and recovery to you directly, so Tojuri never sees your Amazon bill or card.

Does Tojuri keep a key to my Amazon account?

No permanent one. The app uses short-lived keys that expire on their own and only reach its own backup folder. You can end that access at any time from your Amazon account.

Can a backup be deleted by someone who gets in?

Not by someone who gets into your Mac or into Tojuri. Each backup is locked for 180 days after it is made, and in that time Tojuri, your Mac and everyday Amazon access cannot change or delete it.

Only your own Amazon administrator, using a deliberate override, can remove a backup early, so keep that sign-in safe. How the lock works.

Recovery

Could I recover my files without Tojuri?

Yes. Your Recovery Kit, your Amazon sign-in and the free recovery tool on the Recovery page get your files back on a Mac, with no Tojuri account.

A small test has passed. A full-scale rehearsal is still to come.
What if I lose my Recovery Code?

Tojuri cannot see your Recovery Code and cannot replace it. Print the Kit and keep it somewhere safe. We can help you use your Kit; without it, nobody can reach your data, and that includes us.

If I get back into my Tojuri account, is my Kit replaced?

No. Getting your Tojuri sign-in back does not replace a lost Recovery Kit. Apart from the Mac that made your backup, the Kit is the only way in, and Tojuri cannot rebuild it.

Print the Kit after your first backup and keep it somewhere safe.
How long does recovery take?

Files backed up in the last 90 days come back straight away. Older files are woken up first: ready within 12 hours, or within 48 hours for a lower cost. After that, the download depends on your internet speed.

Does recovery cost extra?

A few files cost pennies. Everything back after a disaster is about $99 to $134 per TB in Amazon fees, mostly the download. The app shows the wait and the cost before anything is charged, and you choose.

I am helping someone else recover. What do I need?

The recovery page, their Recovery Kit, their Amazon sign-in, and a Mac. That is the whole list.

Getting started

How do I get it?

Ask for an invite. When a place opens, we email you the download. Drag Tojuri into Applications, sign in with the email your invitation went to, and it walks you through your own Amazon account. Your first hour, step by step.

What do I need before I start?

A Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 14 Sonoma or later, about an hour, an Amazon Web Services account on Amazon's paid plan (a card and your phone if you are new), and a printer or a safe place for your Recovery Kit.

Choose Amazon's paid plan: Amazon closes free-plan accounts after six months and deletes everything in them, including backups. The paid plan has no monthly fee.
Why does it ask for Full Disk Access?

So it can read the folders you choose. You stay in control of what it backs up.

When do I make my Recovery Kit?

After your first backup. Keep it somewhere safe: it is the only way to open your backup if this Mac is lost.

How do I reach a person?

Write to hello@tojuri.com. You reach the people building it, not a queue. Privacy questions go to privacy@tojuri.com.

Tell us what you saw, not what you think went wrong. A photo of the screen is perfect.
